Materiality and Focus Areas
Hesperia uses Focus Areas in its ESG reporting to clearly identify and prioritise the issues that are most material to our business, stakeholders and communities. This approach ensures our reporting remains focused, relevant and aligned to where we can have the most significant impact.
Focus Areas are reviewed regularly and are expected to evolve in response to changes in our operations, stakeholder expectations and industry best practice. While each Focus Area is assigned to an Environmental, Social or Governance category based on best fit, we recognise the interconnected nature of ESG issues. The framework also reflects Hesperia’s three spheres of influence – Corporate, Projects and Community – supporting practical, meaningful and accountable ESG outcomes.

Environmental Focus Areas and Our Response
Environmental Focus Areas and Our Response
Act on Climate Change
We reduce greenhouse gas emissions through efficient design, low-carbon materials, renewable energy, and verified carbon management. We measure, disclose, and continuously improve operational and embodied carbon performance while supporting climate resilience and credible offset programs.
Support the Renewable Energy Transition
We support the renewable energy transition through electrification, energy efficiency, renewable electricity procurement, and investment in solar and battery infrastructure. We enable renewable energy adoption across our operations, assets, and communities while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Manage Consumption and Reuse of Resources
We minimise resource consumption through efficient design, waste avoidance, material reuse, recycling, and responsible water management. We seek circular economy outcomes across development, construction, and operations while reducing waste, conserving resources, and improving long-term environmental performance.
Achieve a net improvement in biodiversity
We enhance biodiversity by protecting and restoring ecosystems, increasing tree canopy and vegetation, and supporting nature-based carbon projects. We integrate biodiversity considerations into project planning and delivery to achieve lasting environmental and community benefits.
How we determine our Focus Areas
Hesperia established its Focus Areas through a formal materiality assessment undertaken in 2021 with an independent external facilitator.
The assessment considered impacts associated with Hesperia’s development, construction, asset management and corporate activities, together with those arising through its value chain and stakeholder relationships.
Workshops and interviews with senior leadership, the Sustainability Group and subject matter specialists assessed actual and potential impacts on the environment, economy and people. Topics were prioritised according to stakeholder interest, significance of impact, strategic relevance, regulatory trends, commercial considerations and Hesperia’s capacity to influence outcomes.
The Focus Areas are reviewed on a biennial basis, with interim reviews undertaken where emerging issues warrant further consideration. The review process incorporates stakeholder feedback, strategic priorities, market developments, regulatory change and industry practice, supporting continual improvement and ensuring the Focus Areas remain relevant to Hesperia’s most significant impacts and opportunities. Recent reviews have increased the emphasis on housing affordability, social infrastructure and the renewable energy transition.
