Reducing Carbon in the Supply Chain at Orthonova

Our latest development within the Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct, Orthonova Orthopaedic Hospital (Orthonova), is rapidly progressing towards completion.
As a signatory of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, we are focused on reducing upfront carbon in our new developments. At Orthonova, we have partnered with Holcim Australia to use their low-carbon concrete product, Holcim ECOPact, with the main contractor, Built, for all structural concrete applications.
To date, more than 4,760m³ of Holcim ECOPact has been poured on site. Based on design-stage life cycle assessment (LCA), this has achieved a 15% reduction in upfront carbon emissions associated with the supply chain and construction process, forming a key component of Orthonova’s decarbonisation strategy. The project aims to achieve a further 5% reduction in embodied carbon through additional initiatives, including efficient design optimisation.
Operational performance is also critical in addressing carbon emissions. Orthonova will be an all-electric building, powered by 100% renewable energy through a combination of on-site solar PV and grid supply.
With concrete responsible for approximately 9% of global greenhouse gas emissions, reducing its impact is essential to addressing climate change. We remain committed to normalising the use of low-carbon concrete across all sectors in which we operate, working closely with supply chain partners to drive meaningful change.
